WHAT IS A MED CARD?
"A medical cannabis card or medical marijuana card is a state-issued identification card that enables a patient with a doctor's recommendation to obtain, possess, or cultivate cannabis for medicinal use..."
WHY SHOULD I GET A MED CARD?
Everyone has their own reasons for getting a Medical Marijuana Card, and should ultimately be a decision you make with a doctor.
Here's a list of a few common reasons people get their Med Cards:
#1 Legal Cannabis Products are sold under two different categories: Medical & Recreational. Recreational products are available to anyone over the age of 21 and Medical products are only accessible to Medical Card holders ages 18 and up. This allows individuals seeking cannabis as medicine to use marijuana at the age of 18 with a recommendation from a doctor.
#2 Legal Cannabis Products categorized as Medical are held to stricter testing criteria than Recreational products. This allows Medical Card holders access to cleaner cannabis products.
#3 Recreational Cannabis Products in Michigan are subject to a 10% excise tax plus the 6% Michigan sales tax. Medical Products are not subject to that 10% excise tax, making it easier for medical patients to afford cannabis.
#4 Marijuana Products categorized as Medical have higher THC limits than Recreational Products, meaning Med Card holders have access to stronger cannabis products than recreational users.
#5 Becoming a Medical Marijuana Caregiver. In Michigan, most people are allowed to grow their own cannabis plants for personal use. Medical Caregivers are allowed to grow cannabis plants for themselves and each of their patients. The number of plants you can have varies by your local laws, ordinances and number of registered patients, but generally speaking, Medical Caregivers have the ability to grow more cannabis plants than non-caregivers.
#6 Some places and dispensaries require you to have a Medical Card upon entry, like Vehicle City Social Club. So, having a Med Card allows you to visit establishments reserved for Medical Users Only.
